$75,000 FOR INDIGENOUS WOMEN IN ADELAIDE
The Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis, today announced $75,000 in further funding for training and support to help empower young Indigenous women in South Australia.
This funding will be used to enhance indigenous women's leadership, representation, safety, wellbeing and economic status at a range of training programs and workshops over 12 months.
Speaking at the YWCA inaugural young women's Leadership Conference 'SHE Leads' Ms Ellis said "Our Government is delivering a further $75,000 to the Young Women's Christian Leadership, through the Indigenous Women's Grants program to help local Indigenous women learn new skills and become leaders in their community."
"This program is dedicated to young women from 18-30 years of age and aims to build the confidence and leadership skills of young Indigenous women.
"Indigenous Women's Grants help local organisations to deliver a wide range of training programs, information sessions, mentoring programs and workshops.
"Through these grants, Indigenous women are able to develop important skills in leadership, advocacy, and community building."
Ms Ellis said the grants were an important part of the Government's commitment to closing the gap of disadvantage that exists between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
YWCA Communications Manager, Chelsea Lewis welcomed the further funding after completing a six month pilot phase.
"Almost two hundred women have connected with the program in Adelaide," Ms Lewis said
"By investing in the skills and leadership of young Indigenous women, we can make a real difference working together to close the gap.
"YWCA of Adelaide is committed to building a stronger community through the leadership of women and girls. We do this by supporting young women on every step of their leadership journey.
"Women are recognised as the agents of change in every community. Australia's Indigenous community has some exceptional change agents on their way.
